What Are People Looking for on the Internet?

by Shiaw-Ling Lai

Jack Marshall of Clickz.com recently posted a fun list of the top hits on the internet in July 2009. Statistics were provided by the online competitive intelligence agency, Hitwise whose “Top 10 Search Terms in 10 Categories” provides monthly insights into internet user behaviors and thoughts.

Not surprisingly, Facebook rules the social networking work with 7.04% share of the searches, not including affilate searches such as “Facebook Login” and “facebook.com.”

In the U.S., car hits for Toyota were #1, just overshadowing the topical Cash-for-Clunkers program. Reflecting car shoppers’ preferences while looking for a fuel efficient alternative, perhaps?

Foodwise, our top American hits included Pizza Hut (with delivery?), McDonalds, Dominos, Subway, Burger King, Starbucks, and Mycokerewards.

While not impressive numbers in and of themselves, keep in mind that these tiny percentages still reflect hundreds of thousands of searches performed all over the country. It’s an interesting gauge on the attention of the public eye of America, and what we want to know most about.
